Biological Assets Valuation
HKAS41 / IAS 41 Agriculture sets out the accounting for agricultural activity – the transformation of biological assets (living plants and animals) into agricultural produce (harvested product of the entity’s biological assets). The standard generally requires biological assets to be measured at fair value less costs to sell.
For instance, in the valuation of a vineyard, each grape vine can be assessed based on its age, health, and expected yield. The fair value can fluctuate based on market trends, weather patterns, and regional demand for specific types of wine. Moreover, in horticulture, the valuation of fruit trees may involve estimating the future production of fruits like apples or oranges, considering factors such as pest management and soil fertility, which could affect the yield.

Plants that bear produce (such as grape vines, fruit trees, rubber tree plantations and oil palms) so that produce-bearing plants are valued at cost less accumulated depreciation and impairment (as is the case for property, plant and equipment) with the output from these assets to be classified as inventory (and the accounting treatment being the lower of cost or net realisable value).
Additionally, the assessment of livestock operations requires an understanding of the breed, age, and health status of the animals involved. For example, beef cattle may be valued differently based on their breed, weight, and the market demand for beef. Each aspect contributes significantly to the overall valuation of the livestock, which can change based on market conditions and production costs.

Our agriculture specialists have deep roots in the industry. In each full scope valuation, they access living conditions carefully and perform necessary due diligence in providing opinions that support valuation.

Agricultural produce is measured at fair value less estimated costs to sell at the point of harvest. [IAS 41.13] Because harvested produce is a marketable commodity, there is no ‘measurement reliability’ exception for produce.
It’s important to also consider the supply chain factors that can impact the fair value of agricultural produce. For example, seasonal fluctuations in supply can lead to price volatility in the market. Harvest techniques and post-harvest handling also play a crucial role in determining the quality and marketability of the agricultural products, thus affecting their valuation.
Experience in Biological Assets Valuation
In conclusion, the expertise of professionals in biological assets valuation is essential in navigating the complexities of market trends and regulatory standards. Their insights not only aid in accurate valuations but also support strategic decision-making within the agriculture sector.
